Educator Reflection 4
As a staff nurse on the Inpatient Hematology-Oncology Unit at Wilmot Cancer Center, I have been asked on several occasions to have nursing students work with me and shadow me as part of their clinical experience. I was able to work one-on-one with students and have several gathered around to listen to instruction on a particular patient involved procedure. Answering questions as students asked them allowed me to realize that I had something to offer new nurses, knowledge and experience. As I watched the students learn and instructed them on oncologic topics, I saw the “light bulb” come on. Witnessing that moment when something clicks with the student and their eyes light up with the discovery and understanding of it made me realize that I wanted to be an educator. This is what drives me to succeed.
Now I desire to witness my students succeed. I want to guide my students in their thought processes to further their progress in higher levels of learning. As the patient’s well-being is to be the primary focus of the student’s efforts in the clinical setting, evidence-based practice will be encouraged. The students will be pushed to the literature to find best practice so that they might excel. Their skills will be reinforced in the hands-on setting. As they learn new skills they will first listen, observe, then do. They will be asked to look at the patient and situation in a holistic manner. As they encounter new information and ways of doing things, they will be challenged. The way they face these challenges will be well thought out and calculated. I want to challenge their thinking. For my students, I wish to instill in them a sense of pride and commitment in their work. It is my hope that they strive for integrity, honesty, and humility, as well as excellence in their careers as nurses.
